Brian, 'zincoln', gave you the likely correct description of it being a .50 Cal. BMG (Browning Machine Gun) cartridge case. Without seeing any head-stamp we can't be positive, but by the photo it does appear to be so.

Now to the correction. you didn't find a 'Bullet.' You found a Cartridge Case or also called a Shell Casing. The 'Bullet' would be the projectile that is expended from the entire Cartridge upon firing. If you found a fully-loaded 'round' or 'Cartridge' it would include the Cartridge Case and the Bullet, and internally the powder needed to fire the round, the Bullet, towards an intended target.

As for why it was in the old park, that's one of those frequent mysteries we have in this great sport, but quite possibly it was maybe a "show-and-tell" type item someone had and lost. It is one of those big-size rounds that wouldn't have been for squirrel hunting in those park settings a hundred or so years ago.
