Monte - thank you....and i too hope that i can find my next 100 much quicker....but not sure if that is reasonable to plan for.
Don't 'plan' for it to happen, just 'expect' it to happen and remember that surprises are just that, so be prepared.

My best day ever was 6 silver coins....and it was not a complete surprise as the location had traffic, promise and isn't close to any population center....so figured it might not have had many coils.
Since it is 2021, and the real hey-day for this sport got started back about 1964 to 1972 just to allow for an 8-year span for different parts of the country (referring to here in the USA), there's a very likely excellent chance that most typically-used and available sites have seen a coil or two, with many / most being worked quite hard by now. However, you just never know so you have to keep an eye open for any and every potential place to work a coil. Just like the out-of-the-way park hill-side that rewarded you well last year.

I can only imagine what it must have been like to find >140 silver dimes in one spot - hard to imagine. Make you wonder if they had a sawdust coin hunt for the kids.
The area was where a gate entered a field, for sports and other activities, right near the old red brick school. This very small 'town' was a simple drive-through spot on the old highway, and S------ was just across the border as we turned north into Idaho on our annual summer vacation travel. No doubt that entry point was where several other local activities were held other than just for school. Likely an admission-charge location there at the gate area, and over time folks lost a lot of dimes. Naturally, with all of them being a Mercury 10¢, you'd figure the activities took place mainly in the 1920'2 through the mid-to-latter 1940's.

What a hoot to be able to go back to that era you describe for a week!

Yes, those were the days and memories are a splendid thing to have around when we have aged a good deal. But it can be good to reflect back on some times & places to jog our memories of other locations we might chance upon. For example, while the metal detecting hobby did surge impressively in moderate to larger-size cities, I have found that some of the smaller towns didn't get worked as much.

Back about 1977 my brother, Ed, was a cop in a small town not far from Pendleton when I paid him a visit. He had casually detected a few places, but he wasn't avidly into the hobby. I was, as you might imagine, so I set out one Saturday morning to work the front of the local grade school, not the back sports fields and play area. I used my Garrett VLF/TR-Disc. w/7" coil and wandered in small circles starting at the front walkway to see if there were any hot-spots. There was near a tree, and there was sort of a pathway going along toward the next tree, and then the next.

I worked that narrow pathway, even though there was no sign of a path in the grass at that time in '77, and it worked an almost straight line to the west, then abruptly turned southward and right up to the front-end door that opened into the lunchroom / auditorium. No worn path, and very few coins other than silver dimes. Not in that >140 count, but it let me walk away after a couple of hours with a good supply of shiny silver coins.

I was at the local hardware store later and talking about metal detecting and the old fellow asked if i found anything. I did indicate a coin or two out in front of the door and he told me they used to line up outside, then file through that door to pay for their lunch or milk. But it had been a few years since they did that which explained why most of those silver Dimes were Mercury and only a small number were early Roosevelt's. Also why there wasn't a current worn path.

Ever since I am always on the look-out for grassy areas, pathways or similar hints in front of other schools in smaller towns / communities. You just never know when you are going to chance upon something good.
