As you might guess, 'Monte-Math' is different.

Rich - here is the breakdown.....quite a distribution. And yes, i do count war nickels (more silver than a half dime). One interesting stat is that while my % of old coin finds are low single digit vs. the total dug in that denomination, my half dollar ratio is at >40%.

Morgan 1

Barber Half 5
Walking Liberty 2
Franklin 1
Kennedy 1

Seated Quarter 2
Barber Q 1
Standing Liberty 3
Washington 15

Seated dime 6
Barber 6
Mercury 18
Roosevelt 19

War Nickel 18

Canadian Half Dime 1

3c silver 1

'Monte-Math': -- A very simple method used when sorting and collecting coins; Instructed in the 1950's 'Coin Collecting Era' bu other Coin Collectors and Coin Shop Dealers; Based on a requirement to sort true 'Silver' coins based on their percentage make-up that required no less than 75% silver content.

How the Topic Derived: -- Like other Coin Collectors, which was very popular at the time, this Monte, like many other coin collecting hobbyists, asked about categorizing those blasted "War Era Nickels" that only contain a small 35% silver content. The above describes why they were not, and are not, counted as a US Silver Coin. Yes, more silver in a bigger-size 5¢ coin than in a dinky, thin Half-10¢, but only the individual coin's silver percentage was considered.

It was 75% silver for those very early 1851-1853 Silver 3¢ pieces, 89.24% silver on the earliest Half-10¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢ and $1 cons .... until they made the change to 90% silver content. THOSE were the 'True' Silver coins we minted and categorized to collect.

Thus, when I look at OregonGregg's report, 'Monte Math' adjusts it as follows:

OregonGregg:
here is the breakdown....

You and I started detecting at the same time, plus or minus a month. So I had to go thru my stuff and see how I did. Ya got me.

Morgan................................1
Barber Half..........................3
Walking Half........................2
Seated Quarter...................2
Barber Quarter....................12
Washington Quarter............2
Seated Dime.......................7
Barber Dime.......................19
Merc Dime..........................15
Rosi Dime...........................7
Half Dime...........................2
War Nickel.........................5

Total Silvers.....................77

Dang, I'm way behind in the silvers :

Thus, the 'Monte Math' for REAL Silver Coins has: Zincoln at 82 and OregonGregg at 72

That means Zincoln still leads the race to 100 real Silver Content coins with OregonGregg trailing by 10 so he still has some catching-up to do.

And their overall success rate for different denominations is kind of interesting:

Both of them have:

• 1 Morgan Dollar
• 2 Walking Liberty Halves
• 2 Seated Liberty Quarters

They are kind of close on some, but disproportionate on Barber Dimes and Barber Quarters, Roosevelt Dimes and Washington Quarters. Personally, I look forward to how these two are going to do this year, factoring in both their individual results from working locations in their areas as well as how they fair on a jaunt or two they will take together. Can Gregg luck upon a few more old silver hot-spots? Will,Brian sweep over another multiple Silver Half honey hole? Yes, I'll keep an eye out .... and continue to use 'Monte Math' when I consider their 'true' Silver Coin recoveries. winking smileysmiling bouncing smileywinking smileysmiling bouncing smiley
